'WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE' SET DESIGN CONCEPT

My Final Major Project for my Foundation Diploma was heavily influenced by my interest in Production Design. Having decided to base a set design on the children’s book ‘Where the Wild Things are’ by Maurice Sendak, I chose to focus on the point of transformation from Max’s bedroom into the forest. As a result of lockdown my resources and materials had suddenly become extremely limited which made me need to think outside the box, using cardboard boxes! As the set grew, on my kitchen floor, I found myself having to improvise in order to try and create as realistic effects as possible. Tin foil, Smarties tubes, and kitchen roll for papier mache made me reminisce watching Art Attack and Blue Peter as a child, perhaps quite appropriate for exploring design through a child’s eyes.
